Am I too old to start personal training?
Absolutely not. We work with people well into their 70s, 80s and beyond. Your program is based on what you can do today, not what you could do 20 years ago and not what someone else your age can do. Whether you are 50 or 90, we all need power.
Is Fit-Rx just for people who are out of shape?
Not at all. Some clients come to us because everyday activities have become harder. Others are already active and want to continue skiing, hiking, cycling, golfing, playing pickleball or traveling for decades to come. The common goal is maintaining the physical capacity to keep doing what you love.
Do I have to be athletic?
Not even close. You do not need athletic experience, coordination or gym knowledge. We teach you what to do and guide you through every session.
What makes Fit-Rx different from a regular gym or personal trainer?
Fit-Rx was built specifically around the needs of adults 50+. We focus on the physical qualities that become increasingly important as we age: strength, power, balance, mobility and reaction speed. Training is one-on-one, individualized and performed in a private, welcoming environment, not a crowded gym.
Why does Fit-Rx focus so much on power?
Because everyday life requires more than strength. Strength is your ability to produce force; power is your ability to produce that force quickly. Getting out of a chair, catching yourself when you trip, climbing stairs and reacting to a loss of balance all require power. Maintaining power can mean better mobility, balance, reaction speed, confidence and independence.
I am already strong. Why do I need power training?
Because strength and power are not the same thing. You can be relatively strong but have difficulty producing that strength quickly. As we age, that ability becomes increasingly important for movement, balance and reacting to the unexpected. We do not just want you to be strong. We want you to be able to use that strength when you need it.
Is power training dangerous for older adults?
Power training does not mean throwing heavy weights around or doing risky explosive exercises. At Fit-Rx, power training is controlled, measurable and appropriate for your ability. We use specialized equipment and carefully selected movements that allow you to train speed and power safely.
What if I have not exercised in years?
That is okay. You do not need to get in shape before coming to Fit-Rx. That is our job. We meet you where you are and build from there.
What if I have arthritis, joint pain or physical limitations?
Having limitations does not necessarily mean you should not exercise. It means your exercise program needs to account for them. We modify movements, resistance, range of motion and training speed based on your individual abilities and limitations.
Do you work with people who have had a hip or knee replacement?
Yes. We frequently work with adults before and after joint replacement once they are appropriate for exercise. Our goal is to help rebuild strength, power, mobility and confidence so you can return to the activities that matter to you. Fit-Rx personal training does not replace physical therapy or medical rehabilitation.
Do you work with people with medical conditions?
Yes, depending on the condition and medical clearance when appropriate. We have experience working with older adults with a variety of chronic conditions and physical limitations. When necessary, we encourage communication with your physician, physical therapist or other healthcare professional.
What happens during my first visit?
We start by learning about you, not by putting you through a workout. We discuss your goals, health and exercise history, limitations, concerns and the activities you want to continue doing. From there, we determine the appropriate starting point and develop a plan specifically for you.
Will I have to use complicated gym equipment?
No. Our trainers guide you through everything. Fit-Rx uses specialized equipment, including Keiser pneumatic resistance and ARX adaptive resistance, because it allows us to precisely control and individualize training. The technology may be advanced, but using it does not need to be complicated.
Will I be sore after training?
You may occasionally feel that you have exercised, especially when you are beginning something new, but extreme soreness is not the goal. We want to provide enough stimulus to create improvement without making you miserable for the next three days. Training should improve your life, not interfere with it.
How often should I train?
For many clients, two or three well-designed sessions per week can be very effective. Your ideal frequency depends on your goals, current condition, recovery and what you are doing outside of Fit-Rx.
Can exercise really improve balance?
Yes. Balance is not just something you either have or do not have. It depends on multiple trainable systems, including strength, power, coordination, sensory information and reaction speed. That is why our approach goes beyond simply standing on one foot.
I am afraid of falling. Can Fit-Rx help?
Fear of falling can cause people to move less, which can further reduce strength, power and confidence. We progressively train the physical abilities involved in staying upright and reacting when something unexpected happens. The goal is not simply to avoid falling. It is to build a body that is better prepared to respond.
Is Fit-Rx a good choice if I want to stay independent as I age?
That is one of the primary reasons Fit-Rx exists. Independence depends on physical capacity: getting up, carrying things, climbing stairs, walking confidently, reacting quickly and continuing to move through the world without constantly needing assistance. We train those underlying abilities.
What should my goal be at 60, 70 or 80?
Think bigger than simply slowing the decline. Your goal might be getting on the floor with your grandchildren, carrying your own luggage, hiking on vacation, playing pickleball, skiing, gardening or living in your own home. We train for the life you want to keep living.
Is it ever too late to improve?
Age changes how we train, but it does not eliminate the body’s ability to adapt. The appropriate program at 80 may look different from the appropriate program at 50, but both people can train toward greater physical capacity.
How do I know if Fit-Rx is right for me?
Come talk with us. We will learn about where you are now, where you want to be and what is getting in the way. If Fit-Rx is a good fit, we will explain how we would approach your training. If we are not the right solution, we will tell you that too.
